A DISCARDED RED LEATHER COUCH ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN CROYDON SPARKED THIS ENTIRE PIECE. SUN-FADED, TORN, AND DESTINED FOR LANDFILL, BUT FULL OF UNREALISED POTENTIAL. I STRIPPED IT DOWN PANEL BY PANEL, BRINGING THE LEATHER BACK TO THE WORKSHOP TO GIVE IT A SECOND LIFE.
THE BAG’S FORM WAS DEVELOPED THROUGH COUNTLESS MOCK-UPS AND STRUCTURAL PROTOTYPES, SHAPING A SILHOUETTE STRONG ENOUGH TO CARRY THE WEIGHT OF ITS STORY. THROUGH RIPPING, DISTRESSING, AND METICULOUS PATTERN-MAKING, THE LEATHER TRANSFORMED INTO SOMETHING RAW AND VISCERAL, ALMOST FLESH-LIKE, INSPIRING THE NAME OF THE PIECE.
WITH THE REMAINING MATERIAL, I CREATED A CORSET-STYLE SKIRT AND CROP TOP TO REVEAL THE “INNER WORKINGS” THEME FOCUSING ON WHAT LIES BENEATH THE SURFACE, BROUGHT OUTWARD THROUGH RECLAIMED MATERIAL.
THE RESULT IS A BAG AND OUTFIT WITH HISTORY, CHARACTER, AND IMPERFECTIONS THAT SPEAK HONESTLY ABOUT WHERE THEY CAME FROM.
